How to Craft
A Wooden Crafting Table, used for many of the basic recipes.

The crafting system in Starbound is complex, with many recipes and blueprints to be found, learned, bought, or otherwise created. The creator of Starbound, Tiy, has stated that the number of items a player will be able to craft will "most likely go into the thousands", with augments, status effects, specific color variations, and more creating a vast and intricate system. Items in the crafting area are organized by various headings, as shown below:

Mechanics

The first part of crafting is simple - the player must locate, gather, or create the required resources and materials for each object as specified by the recipe. Recipes can include complex or simple instructions, and often scale depending on rarity. For instance, the Crafting Table is common, and so the recipe is itself made of common material that is easily procured - Wood Planks vis-a-vis Unrefined Wood. Once the material is collected, the player needs to open a crafting interface, and once inside, they will find options to create the item per default or learned instructions and recipes.

Materials

The universe of Starbound is filled with varied and different materials that produce wildly different items. Each planet holds specific items and resources to that particular biome or terrain; because of this, one may find groupings of rare items on one planet, and common items on another planet, with items that appear on neither planet being possibility. The items crafted from these materials will likewise vary greatly, with hazmat suits, cowboy hats, overalls, swords, guns, and more deriving from this extremely complex system.

Armor

Armor comes in many forms and types, typical armor is made from the various Bars smelted from ore found in the surface of planets. In most cases the player requires 67 bars (134 ore) and some pixels to make a complete set of armor using an anvil or metalwork station.

the player can also craft various armors with materials such as leather and fabric using a Yarn Spinner.

Food

Food can be crafted at a kitchen or campfire, and is made again of varying meats, produce, or other components. Some food must be cooked to give positive status effects, and some foods can be eaten raw; this adds to the complexity of the system, with several foods having a "tier" system dependent on whether or not the food is cooked.
