An example of the many variants of procedually generated monsters that can be found.

Monsters are the various moving and living entities found within Starbound. Most monsters are proceduarally generated, meaning that their attacks, physical features, and colors all vary depending on the environment the creature is found in. Monsters can be affected by the environment like the player can, but some unique monsters have individual resistances or immunities. This means almost every planet will have it's own unique sets of monsters. These randomly spawned creatures vary in their hostility to the player, as some will only attack if the player attacks them first, while others will automatically attack the player if they comes within range. Monsters upon death will drop either pixels or Raw Alien Meat, both with a 50% drop-rate. Using a Hunting Bow of any tier will increase the drop-rate of Raw Alien Meat to 80% and add a 20% chance to drop Leather.

Unique Monsters

Mini-bosses

These are rare monsters that sometimes that can be found, and most planets will only typically have one to three finite spawns of them. They are procedurally generated like normal monsters, but they are much larger and have red particle effects around them. These monsters will drop weapons of a high tier suitable to the current sector and/or threat level, although will more commonly drop weapons with a special effect. They also has a chance to drop shields.

Bosses

Notes

  • Using a hunting bow will prevent the player from gaining any pixels.
  • Monsters generated at night are generally stronger, meaning that players may need to seek shelter until daytime to avoid them.

Bugs & Anomalies

Bug : Sometimes, when hitting a monster on a world, especially with a wooden bow, the entire game crashes. This can be followed by a series of crashes, access denied violations, etc.
Bug.png
Bug : Rarely when killing a monster, the game freezes entirely and the monster is kept stuck without dying and the whole game world freeze. Getting back to the ship, seems to work, it resumes, but if you warp back to the planet, "sometimes", window turns black, and only exiting seems to work to solve it.
