Non-playable characters, or NPCs, are characters controlled by the computer instead of the player. For example, merchants and guards are NPCs. It is possible to kill NPCs, whether or not they are passive or aggressive. Certain NPCs can be spawned by the player. (Note: You can not get brains from the Spawnable NPC's)

Bugs & Anomalies
Whenever a NPC is taking damage, battle music is playing, even if the player is far from the battle.
Speech Bubbles of NPC's in villages
sometimes disappear leaving only the left border of the bubble and nothing else visible. This may be bound to hunger meter and/or loot messages, appearing down the screen.
You can still purchase items from hostile NPC shop owners, and can also persuade them to lead you back to their shop. They will continue to attack you while you shop. All dialog plays out as usual.
Villagers or merchants in villages may be killed without guards coming to fight the player, unless a guard is attacked specifically.
Villagers will till the soil in random spots, with no rhyme or reason.
Client crashes, seemingly at random upon killing NPC Villagers. This seems to happen most when said Villagers are cornered. Does not seem to occur with Guards. Kills were made using Melee weapons
Nearly all NPCs have a tendency to clone themselves.
On occasion, cultists near the black skull alters will spawn four blocks underground, leaving only their heads visible.
The cultists sometimes spawn in the ground, with only their heads showing. They are stuck there until hit.
NPCs that use firearms will drop melee weapons upon death
Enemies with guns have a blindspot right up close to them, where they cannot hit you
